Three buying situations, three sets of questions

Nurseries & crop supports

Specify crop, support length and diameter range, insertion depth and exposure conditions. Natural culms offer visible variation; stricter straightness and diameter sorting can require a different quote. Record the accepted limits rather than asking for an undefined quality grade.

For a seasonal order, state the required arrival date and your receiving schedule. Confirm bundle count, protection from moisture during transport and whether the material will be stored under cover. A bamboo stake is not an engineered load-bearing component unless the supplier provides suitable evidence for that use.

Material importers & distributors

Distinguish solid culm, split material and assembled board. Ask for bamboo composition, species, cultivated or wild origin, dimensions, finish and moisture target. A similar-looking board can contain a different assembly or treatment, which changes what should be checked.

Keep pallet dimensions, carton counts, piece counts and weight basis aligned across offers. Ask who supplies legal-harvest information and who accepts HTS classification responsibility. Documentation scope depends on the exact product; confirm the destination process with the buyer's broker.

Finished product programs

Describe the intended contact, cleaning and handling conditions for tableware or crafted articles. Agree acceptable color, node marks and dimensional variation using a reference sample. An unfinished material quote and a packaged retail article quote should remain separate.

Handmade finishing may provide the appearance a buyer wants while allowing individual variation. A repeatable presentation may require tighter sorting, more processing or different packing. Ask suppliers to price these choices separately, and obtain item-specific evidence for any suitability claim before approval.
